Starting at 5PM on June 21st, owners and renters of Boy Scout-style Pinewood Derby racecars will compete for cash, prizes and a spot on the Death Race Derby Cup, gloriously on display at Five Star Bar and Grill.

In what has become a nefarious event for the bar, the single-elimination tournament will again be hosted and sponsored by local sketch-comedians, The Lakewood Manor Players. The LMP have hosted a variety of scandalous events in the past including the Santa vs. Jesus Boxing Match, Communist Party and Sex, Drugs and Rock n Roll Trivia.

Building on the success of previous Death Race Derbies, which have included actual Indy car rides through the neighborhood and the occasional firework powered entry, this year’s race will again raise the bar with a fire leap of death at the end of the track. “At first we thought of turtle races, but didn't like the idea of having to put them in the basement to die afterward," says Five Star owner Lyle Aker. Instead, he and LMP’s Alec Pinkston decided, “to dirty up the clean pinewood derby image. We took a classic concept and doused it in bourbon and now fire."

All cars, new and old, are welcome to compete. Last year’s Death Race Derby winner was a 1991 Regional Boy Scout Derby Champion and had sat unused for 18 years before coming out of retirement. In addition to speed, unique designs are rewarded for creativity in the categories of “Most Rock and Roll”, “Sexiest” and “Funniest”. Designs in the previous races have ranged from the Pope-mobile to the Millennium Falcon.

Pinewood Derby car kits are available for $10 at Five Star Bar and Grill, which includes entrance fee. Want to take a shot at the cup but don’t have time to build a car? Rental cars will be available on the day of the race for $5 entrance fee.
