HR managers are being urged to ask employees to promote their company to graduates through a new website aimed at easing the recruitment process.
Online PR News – 17-June-2011 – – TheJobCrowd.com, which launched late last year, is a social networking site for job hunters, which allows employees to post job reviews, detailing exactly what their role entails, without any marketing spin.
With the competition for young talent tougher than ever it’s believed firms can stand out from the crowd by offering valuable information about positions, over and above the details contained in a basic job description.
Employees from more than 100 firms, including almost half of the Times Top 100 Graduate Employers, including the likes of KPMG, Morgan Stanley, British Airways and Innocent Drinks, have already posted reviews on the site.
The site encourages employees to write about what the role entails on a day-to-day basis covering aspects such as how much responsibility and creative freedom they’re given and what the opportunities for promotion are really like.
Visitors to the site are able to submit further questions to the anonymous posters, allowing them to explore the role in more detail and assess if it really is for them.
The employer benefits regardless of whether or not the candidate feels the job is for them.
By offering additional information about the realities of the role candidates are able to gain a better understanding of what working for the company would entail, setting it apart from competitors providing only basic job descriptions.
If the role isn’t of interest to the candidate this reduces the number of speculative applications the firms HR teams have to deal with, significantly reducing the time and money spent on the recruitment process.
By asking their employees to post reviews on the site HR teams are also putting their companies in the shop window to thousands of students at more than 40 top UK universities who already use the site to research career options.
Adrian Thomas, head of resourcing at Network Rail, says he believes the site is of benefit to employers.
Mr Thomas said: “In order to deliver a better and more efficient railway that Britain relies on, we must continue to attract high quality graduates to join our team and we’re always looking at new ways we can do this from the traditional channels.
“Having graduates that already work for us tell their story of the opportunities and experience they get at Network Rail and what they enjoy about working for a big national company is a real plus. Getting these real life messages out to thousands of people is of great value to us.”
Richard Waite, graduate recruitment campus officer at Grant Thornton says he believes the site will continue to be of benefit to the firm in attracting future talent.
Mr Waite said: “Peer to peer networking has become ever more important in the development of our employer brand. Digital word of mouth through review sites and social media is having a greater impact on potential candidates and their views of us as a firm and workplace.
“We actively encourage our current talent to talk about their experiences and to provide an insight into their working lives, on sites like TheJobCrowd.com, in order to attract future talent.”
The site is currently receiving thousands of visits each week from job hunters, a figure which is expected to rise steadily in future as the number of job reviews rise.
Keren Mitchell, co-founder of TheJobCrowd.com, says the site offers a great way for HR managers to attract high quality candidates without having to spend excessive time speaking to candidates on university campuses.
Mr Mitchell said: “Graduates and employers alike have told us that many applicants don’t understand enough about the day-to-day workings of the roles they’re applying for.
