M86 Security Positioned as Visionary in 2011 Magic Quadrant for Secure Web Gateway

Evaluation Based on Completeness of Vision and Ability to Execute

Online PR News – 01-June-2011 – – M86 Security, the global expert in real-time Web and email threat protection, today announced it has been positioned by Gartner, Inc. in the Visionaries quadrant of the Magic Quadrant report for Secure Web Gateway. M86 is one of 19 vendors included in this Magic Quadrant report.

According to Gartner, “The growing malware threat continues to drive the SWG market. Solutions for detecting malware vary widely in sophistication, ranging from basic signature-based to advanced heuristics-based analysis. The market is still dominated by on-premise solutions, but cloud services are growing rapidly.”

“We are pleased to be recognised as a Visionary in Gartner’s SWG report and to see M86 acknowledged for its significant progress in the last year,” said William Kilmer, Chief Marketing Officer, M86 Security. “We feel this is particularly noteworthy recognition of M86 for key malware technologies – such as our patented Real-time Code Analysis™ and Dynamic Web Repair™ – which protect organisations against increasing cyber-attacks on Web 2.0 technologies, as well as the flexible deployment options that M86 offers with hardware, virtual appliance, and hybrid cloud deployment alternatives.”

The report highlighted that, “Anti-malware capabilities should be the most heavily weighted criterion when evaluating Secure Web Gateways (SWGs). Organisations that need the most advanced security protection should evaluate solutions that use non-signature-based techniques capable of detecting targeted malware.”

After assessing the SWG solutions in today's market, Gartner observations include:

•Malware detection is the key differentiator in the SWG market. Most solutions provide a "cocktail approach," which includes traditional reactive techniques, such as signature-based malware analysis and detection of known bad Web destinations, along with real-time techniques for detecting new and targeted threats. Site reputation analysis and real-time code analysis that look for common malware techniques in Web code (for example, JavaScript) are the most common approaches. The depth of these techniques varies considerably amongst solutions.

•Application control and social-media policies have become higher priorities for
enterprises. There are two types of Web applications: those that can be identified by URL (for example, FarmVille) and those that use unique protocols and client applications (for example, Skype). URL-based applications can be identified and classified, allowing for easy blocking or more granular control. The ability to block or manage applications such as Skype and instant messaging (IM) requires broader port/protocol inspection and special network-traffic signatures.

•Reporting and ease of management, which vary significantly amongst vendor solutions, remain important decision criteria for SWG buyers.

The M86 Secure Web Gateway (SWG) protects organisations from dynamic malware using patented Real-time Code Analysis technology. Through policy enforcement and granular Web controls, it enables organisations to manage productivity, reduce data breach risks and access Web 2.0 applications safely. Its hybrid-cloud option extends full, consistent protection to mobile and remote users through a single management interface; and its virtual appliance option allows organisations the flexibility to deploy the M86 SWG on their own hardware of choice; thus, reducing cost. Easy to manage and integrate, the M86 SWG requires minimal support and resources, making it a compelling and cost-effective solution for enterprises.
