Online PR News – 04-December-2009 – – Mumbai, 4 December, 2009: With its new nitrous oxide reduction unit (LARA) at the Krefeld-Uerdingen site, LANXESS is among the winners of the â365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideasâ contest, whose patron is German President Horst KĂśhler. More than 2,200 applications were submitted. An independent panel of judges chaired by Professor Martin Roth, General Director of the State Art Collections in Dresden, and Professor Michael HĂźther, Director of the Cologne Institute for Business Research, has selected LANXESS as one of the winners.
In the coming year, the 365 prize-winners will become ambassadors for the âGermany â Land of Ideasâ initiative, representing through their know-how the creativity and innovative strength of the Federal Republic of Germany. Each âSelected 2010 Landmarkâ will present itself to the public on a different day of the year. It will be the turn of LANXESS state-of-the-art nitrous oxide reduction unit on April 16.
The â365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideasâ series has been organized by the âGermany â Land of Ideasâ initiative and Deutsche Bank since 2006. The goal of the organizers is to motivate people in Germany to think outside the box and have the courage, curiosity and spirit of innovation to explore new avenues.
LARA neutralizes climate-unfriendly nitrous oxide
The specialty chemicals group will cut emissions of climate-unfriendly gases at its German facilities through 2012 by around 80 percent compared to 2007 levels. The core project here is the new, second plant for reducing the greenhouse gas dinitrogen monoxide (N2O), more commonly known as nitrous oxide. The new nitrous oxide reduction facility was officially inaugurated in March 2009 and supplements the existing unit at the location. The new facility can neutralize around 5,000 metric tons of nitrous oxide per year, which corresponds to approximately 1.5 million metric tons of CO2 equivalents. In total, with its two plants, LANXESS will annually reduce five to 10 million tons of CO2 equivalents, depending on requirements. With the new, second facility LANXESS is emerging as the technology leader in the reduction of N2O. Nitrous oxide is produced during the manufacture of adipic acid, a precursor for plastics. Although the gas is completely safe for humans, it is over 300 times more damaging to the climate than carbon dioxide. With its two facilities the specialty chemicals group will be the worldâs only adipic acid producer able to fully neutralize all of the climate-unfriendly gas N2O it generates.
Nitrous oxide is broken down into its two constituents
In a thermal process, nitrous oxide is separated from the waste gas stream from adipic acid production into its constituent parts oxygen and nitrogen at temperatures of over 1,000 degrees Celsius. The heat this creates generates steam that is fed into the supply network at CHEMPARK Krefeld-Uerdingen.
Nitrous oxide is a chemical compound comprising nitrogen and oxygen. Traditionally, it served in medicine as an anesthetic and is now used, among other applications, as a propellant for foodstuffs such as in whipped-cream chargers.
