SMC Pneumatic Cylinder Performs in Corrosive Atmosphere

SMC Pneumatic teamed with Ohio Transmission & Pump (OTP) to double the operating life of a pneumatic cylinder operating near an acid bath.

Online PR News – 04-December-2009 – – INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA – SMC Pneumatic engineers teamed with Ohio Transmission & Pump (OTP) to double the operating life of a pneumatic cylinder operating in a corrosive atmospher near an acid bath.

A machine builder in Indiana builds OEM machines for the medical equipment industry. This OEM was experiencing repeated failures with the pneumatic cylinders it used to move parts into an acid bath. Although the cylinders were constructed of stainless steel, they exhibited premature shaft wear which caused the cylinders to fail in the corrosive atmosphere. After investigating the application, OTP Sales Engineer Darrel Lithgow determined that the cause of the premature shaft wear was the design of the cylinder bushing.

“We discovered the cause of the failure by studying the wear pattern on the shaft,” stated Darrel Lithgow, OTP Sales Engineer. “A better bushing design would solve the problem.”

After understanding the root cause, Lithgow engaged SMC engineers to design a special cylinder to replace the other manufacturer’s failing cylinders. This special SMC Pneumatic cylinder utilizes a different bushing design to reduce the shaft wear. The SMC cylinder was installed more than six months ago and is holding up much better than the other manufacturer’s product. The operating life of the SMC cylinder is at least double that of the previous cylinder.

SMC Pneumatic is the world’s largest manufacturer of pneumatic automation products, including a broad selection of cylinder, actuator, solenoid valve, air preparation, and vacuum solutions. Due to SMC Pneumatic’s ongoing attention to reducing their internal manufacturing costs, the customer’s purchase price of this specially designed cylinder was actually less than that of the competitor’s standard cylinder.

Lithgow takes full advantage of the resources of both SMC and OTP. “The OTP website includes full support of SMC Pneumatic,” Lithgow continued. “Ask the OTP Experts” on-line functionality enables maintenance, purchasing and engineering associates to quickly find technical information about SMC products, and to easily connect to local experts in fluid power, pumps, mechanical power transmission, bearings and electrical products.
