In addition, he has been a public speaker and performer of music workshops in public elementary schools, teaching up to 400 students about techniques used in modern jazz.
His approach, which gets results quickly, is phonics based. Stephen's phonics approach is excellent with children, and gets kids on track for any musical environment.
Stephen has been featured in several publications, such as Modern Drummer and Downbeat.
He performs and records regularly in Europe, and has over 30 years of professional experience as a drummer.
Stephen has performed and studied music for the majority of his life in New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. While living in these centers of musical development, he trained with world-class masters such as Ed Shughnessy (Tonight Show), Dom Famulero (Clinician/Educator), Kenwood Dennard (Prince, Sting), Sunship Theus (McCoy Tyner), William Winnant (Classical Percussionist), Alan Dawson (Dave Brubeck Quartet) Pete Magadini (Educator/Performer), Bob Moses (Gary Burton Quartet/Leader), and many others. In addition to studying with great drummers, he has studied North Indian classical percussion, West African drumming, and is currently studying South Indian classical music. His background of study with master musicians and of other musical traditions has molded him into being an outstanding teacher.
