Virginia Union University announces new Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs
Online PR News – 28-August-2020 – Richmond, Virginia – Virginia University University proudly announces the promotion of Dr. Terrell Strayhorn to the position of Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, effective August 17. As Provost, he will continue in his roles as a tenured Professor of Urban Education in the Evelyn Reid Syphax School of Education and Director of the Center for the Study of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Additionally, he will assume responsibilities as Accreditation Liaison.
Dr. Strayhorn has over 15 years of experience in higher education, recognized across the nation as a leading authority and prolific researcher. Previously, he served on the faculty and administration at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville (UTK), The Ohio State University (OSU), and LeMoyne-Owen College (LOC), serving as UTK Special Assistant to the Provost, OSU College of Education Diversity Officer, and LOC Vice President for Academic & Student Affairs/Chief Academic Officer. He has made extraordinary achievements at previous institutions in developing future faculty leaders, increasing academic grants, creating new campus-corporate partnerships, successfully achieving accreditation with ACBSP and SACSCOC reaffirmation, building graduate pathways, and monetizing academic assets to generate new revenue, just to name a few. Author of 10 books, over 200 scholarly publications, "Strayhorn is a strategic academic leader with an entrepreneurial spirit." He specializes in bringing evidence-based practices to administrative leadership by building strong teams to produce greater collective impact.
Strayhorn's appointment represents a critical decision in VUU President Hakim J. Lucas' tenure. In a campus-wide notice, President Lucas acknowledged his confidence in Strayhorn's leadership, passion, and readiness to oversee "the Division of Academic Affairs in [the University's] efforts to achieve 'Best in Class' status." Earlier he stated, "[Strayhorn] embodies the leadership characteristics that VUU is recruiting as we emerge to a new globally-recognized institution of higher learning." As Provost, Strayhorn will oversee the university's academic and research enterprise including five academic schools, University College, VUU Global Campus, plus Libraries, Honors, Sponsored Programs, and TRiO, to name a few. A native of Virginia Beach, Strayhorn earned his doctorate in higher education from Virginia Tech with a concentration in race and social policy. He completed a masters degree in education policy from the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia (UVA) and a bachelor's degree in music and religious studies (double-major) from UVA. He serves in several editor roles for academic journals and Fellow in the AGB Institute for Leadership & Governance.
