Wilmington Eye's new surgery center will give patients across eastern North Carolina access to high-quality, specialized surgical services at a lower cost.

Online PR News – 20-November-2019 – Wilmington, North Carolina – Wilmington Eye, the largest multi-specialty ophthalmology group in southeastern North Carolina, is pleased to announce its plans to open a new freestanding ambulatory surgery center located on 16th Street, a few blocks from the practice's largest location in Wilmington. This state-of-the-art surgical facility will be the only ambulatory surgery center in eastern North Carolina focused primarily on ophthalmic surgery cases.

According to a recent report by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, healthcare costs in the US continue to rise and are projected to climb to $17,000 per person (approximately $6 trillion) by 2027. With Wilmington Eye's new freestanding ambulatory surgery facility, the practice will be able to offer the same high-quality surgical services at a lower cost to patients.

Currently, Wilmington Eye performs thousands of ophthalmic procedures, such as refractive surgery, bladeless cataract surgery, blepharoplasty and strabismus surgery for both pediatric and adult patients at various hospital-based surgical facilities throughout the region. In these hospital-based facilities, patients pay a much higher cost for their procedure, oftentimes for fees unrelated to their procedure, such as inpatient services and hospital-based overhead fees. This can result in patients paying nearly double for any given outpatient procedure. With this 15,500 square foot surgery center that is expected to open in 2021, patients can expect to receive the same level of exceptional care and surgical precision that the practice is recognized for at a significantly lower cost to patients.

"The opening of Wilmington Eye's surgery center is going to greatly increase access to cutting-edge ophthalmic surgery at drastically reduced costs. But this is not only a major advancement for our patients that will be having surgery here. It will also benefit our entire community by alleviating pressure on the healthcare system in southeastern North Carolina as it struggles to maintain access to care with the exploding population", said Dr. Alan Oester, Jr., oculoplastic and reconstructive surgeon at Wilmington Eye.

In addition to lower costs, patients can also expect to see increased flexibility with scheduling and much shorter wait times. More consistent and specifically trained nursing staff will also provide patients with superior surgical outcomes.
