Facing the Flames Together: Wives of Firefighters Come Together for Online PTSD Conference

The FireWife Summit hopes to reach wives of firefighters with relevant and practical information to deal with PTSD and mental health in their lives.

Online PR News – 15-October-2019 – Eatonville – As Fire Prevention Month activities are planned throughout North America to raise awareness of Fire Safety, another group of frontline responders are putting together the final details for the first ever PTSD Conference for Wives of Firefighters. Scheduled to run October 29th and 30th, the free conference brings together experience and expertise through a series of live workshops focused on behavioral health awareness, suicide prevention, self care and steps to healthy relationships in a trauma filled career path. With an estimated 20% of firefighters in the United States suffering from Post Traumatic stress disorder, the information is both timely and relevant for those living with first responders.

"With the help of several amazing sponsors, The FireWife Summit hopes to reach the wives of firefighters across North America with relevant and practical information to deal with PTSD in their lives and those of their friends," says Val Selby, founder of Wife Behind the Fire and lead organizer for the event, "The reality is even if it's not in our own families, it's happening within the crews and departments of the people our spouses work with - and knowledge is the key to identifying, supporting and treating those afflicted."

For two nights, viewers will be able to listen and ask questions to understand the PTSD diagnosis and aid in prevention. Attendees will learn things our firefighters don't share FROM a firefighter's perspective, how a PTSD diagnosis affects wives, things that can be done before a potential diagnosis occurs and ways to ensure their own health as caregivers.

"These are difficult discussions to have," says Selby, "especially in the close-knit environment that firefighters work and live in, so the online format allows people a safe space to explore the topics that are scary and often unspoken."

Wives of Firefighters are encouraged to sign up for the summit prior to the event even if they can't make it to the live sessions as the presentations will be recorded and available for free to those who are registered.
