iCell outlines its strategy for making single cell protein (SCP) within water treatment facilities at food and beverage manufacturers

Online PR News – 06-August-2019 – WAUNAKEE – iCell Sustainable Nutrition presented at the Nutrient Removal and Recovery Symposium held by the Water Environment Federation (WEF) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The presentation "Successful Upcycling of Residual Brewery Nutrients into an SCP Ingredient" corresponded to the manuscript of the same title. The paper was delivered by Seth Terry, lead author and co-originator of iCell technology.

During his delivery, Dr. Terry emphasized the complementary nature of iCell's approach for making single cell protein (SCP) within water treatment facilities at food and beverage manufacturers. He further pointed to the company's strong operational history at a brewery in Zhejiang Province, China as well as the advantageous economics that derive from using castaway nutrients and existing infrastructure. Already at this site, iCell has treated millions of cubic meters of water and produced thousands of tons of packaged ingredient for inclusion in animal feeds, especially those bound for swine.

Following the presentation, audience members expressed high interest by posing numerous questions to Dr. Terry. Several queries related to iCell's approach to process control, which relies on maintaining strict control of balanced growth and low cell age and which further requires less aeration volume and energy versus conventional approaches. Other questions spoke to iCell's unique two-stage drying strategy and the broad suitability to multiple influent waters including sugar, corn, potato, soy, and other agriculture-based manufacturing. As evidence supporting this production flexibility, Dr. Terry cited iCell's newly constructed facility in Shandong Province, China to produce SCP at a wet corn mill focused on producing sugar.
