LATINO BAR ASSOCIATIONS TO FIGHT 25TH WARD ELECTION FRAUD IN UPCOMING APRIL 2nd RUN OFF ELECTION

Online PR News – 22-March-2019 – Chicago, IL – The Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois (HLAI), the largest Hispanic Bar Association in the state and the Puerto Rican Bar Association of Illinois (PRBA) announced today that it will send more than 20 attorneys into polling places in the 25th Ward to address the allegations election fraud, vote-buying and other tactics used in the Ward during the February 26th Election.

The 25th Ward is a very diverse community of color and many were affected by this problem and in the interest of working across communities to safeguard voters' rights HLAI is committed assuring that each vote counts on Election Day and that the new Mayor, Treasurer and Alderman of the 25th Ward are selected fairly. "The allegations of fraud taking place in one of Chicago's most vibrant Mexican communities is shocking and will not be tolerated by our organization without a fight," said Juan Morado Jr., President of HLAI. "We will be fielding over 20 attorneys on Election Day, and we are working with the Chicago Lawyers for Civil Rights to train poll watchers and attorney volunteers." Claudia Badillo, President of the PRBA stated that "PRBA is proud to partner with HLAI on this important effort. No voter should be disenfranchised and our role as attorneys is to uphold the law and serve our community."

Multiple allegations of unlawful vote-buying practices during the 25th Ward Municipal General Election were first brought to light by volunteer attorneys with the Chicago Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and are currently being investigated by three government agencies, including the Cook County State's Attorney, the Illinois Attorney General, and the Chicago Board of Elections. The allegations include giving Target gift cards to citizens who proved they voted in the Pilsen area, as well as taking incomplete vote-by-mail ballots from seniors in Chinatown. In addition, we encourage anyone who see these types of illegal tactics on election day to utilize the Chicago Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights hotlines to ask questions or report problems: 866 OUR VOTE, 888 VE Y VOTA, 888 API VOTE, and 844 YALLA US.

HLAI and PRBA will be hosting a press conference on this issue TOMORROW, March 22, at 10:30 at the Chicago City Hall, 2nd Floor Lobby.
