It appears brands could be turning their backs on traditional launch techniques in favour of launching products on social media networks.

Online PR News – 17-February-2011 – – It appears brands could be turning their backs on traditional launch techniques in favour of launching products on social media networks. Punch Communications has investigated how brands are successfully launching products on social media platforms, as an alternative to traditional launch techniques, meaning they avoid paying huge media costs but still create a massive buzz.

Last year, Ford exclusively provided its Facebook fans with the unveiling of the Ford Explorer. Rather than choosing to unveil the car through a traditional car show, Ford revealed its new model to nearly 53,000 fans, as well as providing them with the opportunity to win one of the cars. Most recently, Domino’s, a brand that has seen the a rise in sales through communicating with fans on social media, created a pizza exclusively for its Facebook devotees. Dominoes revealed the Spanish Sizzler pizza to its fans as well as providing them with an exclusive promotion price of £9.99.

Holly Henstock, Account Manager at PR Company Punch Communications said: “Brands have and are continuing to utilise social media in order to announce business news, but product launches seem to be increasingly popular. Traditionally brands have turned to the media in order to announce product news as well as host product launch events. Presently, however, brands know they can reach thousands of consumers through social networks on their brand pages, but it should be considered that social media may not be applicable for all launches; but certainly in the case of consumer goods, many brands have demonstrated this can be successful."
