Building on a tradition of quality and unconventional style, Alfredo J. Molina purchased Black, Starr & Frost in 2006. Black, Starr & Frost serves discriminating clients from their by appointment only salon in New York City. The California store has been located in beautiful South Coast Plaza for over 20 years. Mr. Molina found that serving his customers in the distinctive, personal tradition that is the signature of the 200 year old company would be more appropriate within their own locale. “We want to provide an experience of privacy and pure luxury as was done for the carriage trade in the 1800’s and early 1900’s,” states Alfredo Molina, and I am honored that Scott Burnham CEO of Burnham USA has provided us with this beautiful location on the water.” The building was built in 1924 and was moved to its present Bayside Drive location in 1958.

Known as the premier jeweler to famous families, royalty and celebrities, the fine jewelry salon was so prestigious, Marilyn Monroe mentioned it in the song “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” from the 1953 blockbuster film, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

Many important inventions and innovations were either financed or first used by Black, Starr & Frost including plate glass windows, the safe deposit box system, fire proof buildings and the light bulb, which was personally financed by Spencer Trask, the grandson of the founder of Black, Starr & Frost.

The firm’s reputation for garnering the most exquisite gems attracted worldwide attention from famous families, such as the Rockefellers, Vanderbuilts, Guggenheims, and Carnegies, and Hollywood starlets, including Peggy Hopkins-Joyce, a Ziegfeld girl turned socialite. Mr. Molina has walked the red carpet with celebrities bejeweled by Black, Starr & Frost.

In February 1928, Hopkins-Joyce acquired one of the world’s largest diamonds from Black, Starr & Frost. The 127.01-carat Portuguese Diamond is presently the largest faceted diamond in the National Gem Collection of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. It’s near flawless clarity and unusual octagonal emerald cut make it one of the world’s most magnificent diamonds.

“Black, Starr & Frost shaped the luxury revolution of the American jewelry industry. It had always been a dream of mine to restore the great house of Black, Starr & Frost back to its former elite position. Since acquiring this historic firm in 2006, I am more dedicated than ever to seeing this dream come true,” states Mr. Molina. Completing this circle of passion and perfection is Molina’s deeply personal and unparalleled commitment to philanthropy. Our mission statement is “Changing the world one jewel at a time.” We believe that every individual is a precious jewel and it is our commitment and social responsibility to ensure that they become brilliant.

Alfredo Molina, an internationally recognized master jeweler is one of a few gemologists in the world qualified to determine the true origin of gemstones.
