BIG PRE-BLACK FRIDAY PR SALE! …And Using PRs to Promote Your Black Friday & Cyber Monday Deals
Posted on 15. Nov, 2011 by Tara Geissinger in Business Publicity
Hosting a Black Friday or Cyber Monday sale can be an excellent way to gain extra visibility for your business. I mean, who isn’t looking for a good deal on those days? Customers are literally scouring the Internet for great sales — imagine the impact on your business if you are able to use this increase in traffic to your advantage!
Timing Your Announcement
When you’re talking about the biggest sale day of the year, one press release simply won’t do! That’s why we recommend publishing multiple news announcements. This gives you a variety of opportunities to link to your site and multiple ways for customers to find you on the big day. Here is our Black Friday Publicity Blueprint:
Press Release #1 – Published on Monday or Tuesday prior to the big event, this press release ‘teases’ your sale. You are announcing that something big is coming on Friday or Monday and urging customers to stay tuned. If you want, you can even let them know what you’ll be featuring — but they’ll have to wait until a certain time on Black Friday or Cyber Monday to cash in!
Press Release #2 – Published the morning of Black Friday, this press release reveals what your business is offering to savvy shoppers. The excitement should be big, utilizing graphics and video whenever possible. (Note: If you are planning on offering a Cyber Monday promotion, this is also a great place to tease that sale!)
Press Release #3 – Published the morning of Cyber Monday, this press release reveals your secret Cyber Monday sale. If you sell anything online, taking part in Cyber Monday is a great way to gain customers and visibility. This sale is either a variation of your Black Friday sale or a completely different offering.
Tips for Writing Strong Black Friday PRs
The main goal of a press release is to get the information in the hands of the people you want to attract. When you are self-publishing a press release online promoting a Black Friday or Cyber Monday sale, most likely you want to attract bloggers compiling a list of great deals, journalists doing the same and customers searching the Internet for sales.
Because of this, your press release should be very succinct and easy to read. This is not the time for cute headlines or creative word play! Your headline should clearly tell WHO is announcing the news and WHAT the news is. The opening paragraphs should tell the reader the exact details they need to know to take advantage of this sale — including a direct link to your sales page.
We also highly suggest including a keyword in your title. This will help your news show up in search engines when journalists, bloggers and customers are conducting their searches.
By keeping it simple and integrating keywords, your press release will get the visibility you are looking for!
Your Turn!

What a great way to announce a sale and an awesome deal for businesses!
With the economy, shoppers are hungry for deals and putting a press release into your target market’s hands is an excellent idea.
I know I’m ready to shop — while I like Black Friday, I LOVE Cyber Monday! Especially if it involves free shipping.

First of all, I love that there is “No Limit to the Amount of Purchases’ — to the contrary, so many other companies are limiting your purchases because of the phenomenal savings on Black Friday and Cyber Monday!
I think using PRs to promote your services/goods is critical for SEO and advertising in general but for Black Friday it’s simply genius!
Great idea!

I don’t leave the house on Black Friday, but I LOVE Cyber Monday!! I will definitely be doing some online research sometime next week for items I’d like to get a great deal on. Like Tara said, ANYONE that sells anything online and is having deals on Monday absolutely needs to promote it, and press releases are a great way to net a wide audience!

@Amber – I have to say, ever since I had my little one, going to any retail shop is a nightmare on black friday! There is so much tugging and pulling — some folk go bananas for deals. But, it certainly makes me appreciate Cyber Monday that much more!

Great tips for Black Friday & Cyber Monday! I’m already trolling for great deals.:)
I think your PR Blueprint is an excellent way to tease your sale. Give potential customers a few tidbits here and a few more in the next release and you can be sure they wont miss that sale!

Working in a retail store on Black Friday is like taking your life into your hands. I did it at Sears…and Black Friday is not for the faint of heart.
